Students play a key role in initiating and organizing each Caltech Y program offered maybe there is a role here for you. From the Y ExComm to other opportunities, such as the committees or service coordinator positions, there is a wide range of leadership opportunities just waiting for your talents and investment.
For those with a specific area of interest, some of the Y committees or coordinator positions may offer the perfect leadership experience. The committees and coordinator positions offer a wonderful opportunity to play a significant leadership role tailored to your level of commitment and interest. The committees and coordinators work with and under the general direction of the Y ExComm and Y staff.
Y-Outdoors consists of enthusiasts interested in planning outdoor adventures for students at Caltech. The committee meets twice a month to organize and plan trips. It is open to anyone interested in coordinating or helping with outdoor adventures.
The Caltech Y Social Activism Speaker Series (SASS) Committee consists of graduate and undergraduate students who are interested in bringing distinguished speakers to campus in order to challenge the community through the exchange of thought provoking ideas. The SASS Committee is open to anyone interested in inviting speakers and coordinating events.
Many programs, and all of the on-going community service projects, depend on student coordinators in order to operate. The coordinator roles and responsibilties vary, and most projects have more than one coordinator. Caltech Y staff and student leaders support, advise, and provide resources to assist in these efforts.
Coordinators recruit volunteers and take sign-ups through the community service list, organize transportation and supplies for on-going service projects with Union Station Homeless Shelter, Reading To Kids, and ASOSAL Tutoring.
The Student Executive Committee (ExComm) is the central programming team for the Caltech Y. Comprised of both undergraduate and graduate students, the ExComm plans and implements programs andsupports other programming as a funding source. Members of the ExComm also serve as members of the Caltech Y Board of Directors which oversees all aspects of the Y operations and development.
Membership in the Y ExComm is limited; however, participation in meetings and events is not. Interested individuals should attend some ExComm meetings to see if the membership commitment suits them. Many are actively involved in leadership through the Y without being members of the ExComm.
