The Caltech Y is excited to announce an ASB trip to Hawai’i. Join other Caltech students on one of our non-traditional spring break experiences in the Big Island of Hawai’i, where we will explore the complex relationships between humans and nature while learning responsible stewardship practices from Indigenous, specifically Kānaka ‘Ōiwi (Native Hawaiian), and contemporary knowledge systems and values.
We will travel to Hawaiʻi island and explore multiple diverse environments ranging from sea-level to the alpine zone ranging from 7,000 to 10,000 ft. in elevation. Students will enjoy a rustic cabin camping experience at campgrounds in protected conservation lands and see the some of the spectacular scenery Hawai’i has to offer.
Through guided facilitation, students will be allowed to access pristine conservation land and learn from cultural experts. Our group will participate in service work, engaging in endemic/native plant restoration, and learn from Native scientists about the sustained observation of diverse environments that created storied land, ocean, and skyscapes of Hawaiʻi island. The goal of this co-learning is to demonstrate the reciprocal relations of kānaka (humans) and ʻāina (the land)
